This paper reviews the ecological literature published during the last 15 years on pollination and seed dispersal by lizards, in order to determine the possible effects of these animals on plant reproduction. This review is only limited to these years because articles on plant-lizard interactions during this period have used more rigorous experimental approaches than those made previously. All compiled data were analyzed considering the conceptual framework provided by the quantity and quality components of pollination and seed dispersal (i.e., effectiveness), since this information is essential to have an idea of the relative contribution of animals to plant fitness. Results showed that 34 species of lizards feed on nectar and fruits of plants. While... |

ABSTRACT Although difficult to pin down an exact figure, the idea that postharvest losses (PHL) of perishables in Brazil stand at 30-45% has been widely accepted. In spite of the modernization of production systems and the logistics and distribution of perishables in the last decades, postharvest losses continue to be a persistent and relevant problem. However, little is known about what has already been published on the subject. This work addresses precisely this issue, based on a comprehensive survey of publications on PHL of fruits and vegetables. Bibliographic searches were performed at the Embrapa’s library system, Google Scholar and SciELO. Several publications on PHL of fruits and vegetables were reviewed and grouped according to their scope and... |

Five varieties of Thai commercial dried and semi-dried pickled fruits and vegetables were sampled from Thai local markets and determined for qualities in chemical and microbiological aspects. Each product variety was sampled from five production plants. The sampling was done in triplication, thus made the total of 75 samples. The products were salted shredded green mango, salted shredded green papaya, sweeten shredded radish pickle, salted whole radish pickle, and whole peach pickle. The samples were analyzed for pH, acidity (as lactic acid), aw, moisture, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, saccharin, NaCl, and SO2. It was found that every sample was an acid food, from which its pH not more than 4.6, except one sample from one brand of salted radish pickle had pH... |
